Anthony Mansfield’s Hector Works imprint is now on release number 11, an EP of tough, percussive house, and the first solo project on the label from the San Francisco mainstay DJ and producer. In an age of less bang for your buck this three tracker bucks and bangs all at once, as it serves up a beefy stew of dislocated disco beats, hefty bass and dubbed out vocal effects.
Side A is populated by the title track, a Joe Bataan referencing dirty disco ditty that’ll have heels clicking and thighs high as it tears along the dotted line of the expressway of love, propelled by rolling congas, a tough kick drum and a pleasantly inappropriate yet nasty bass-line. Please use with caution, but often.
“Bluetooth To Another Dimension” kicks off side one with glitchy bass, a naggingly incessant chime, synthy swirls – or swirly synths — and what sounds like heavy breathing, before descending into an acid accented chunkathon, propped up on tough and strident beats that you won’t be sleeping on. Proceedings close with “Swamp Kat,” perhaps the track that defines the maneuverings of this entire oeuvre, with its dirty amalgam of unhinged vocals, tribal drums and a sparse, highly resonant bass line, which dwells in the mid range and wakes you up every bar or so with a jolting stab. It’s a prime dj tool for those who like to work the funk hard.
